Unfortunately, yet another Masters has drawn to a close. However, it’s now lottery season. The singular time of year where I am, briefly, a potential Patron.
Since we have a few days until June 1st, let’s take a look at the lottery.
The Lottery History
The Masters ticket lottery, as we know it today, exists because people completely lost their minds over practice round tickets.
Which, to be fair, makes absolute sense.
Back in the day, if you wanted to attend a practice round, you could just go to Augusta and try your luck at the gate. No online system. No formal process. Just show up and hope for the best.
So naturally, tens of thousands of people did just that.
By 1994, it had reached a breaking point. Huge crowds. Way too many people. Everyone trying to get their hands on practice round tickets at the same time. Augusta National looked at the situation and basically said, this cannot continue. (Check out the post on thegreatgolfblog.com for the full history.)
So they introduced the lottery system.
Not for tournament rounds.
For practice rounds.
And now here we are.
The Reality
No one actually knows anything about the Masters lottery.
There are no published odds. Limited information on the process. It’s not a waitlist process. No “you were close this year.” Just a form and a dream.
We do have some estimates. Millions of applicants. Very limited tickets. The odds are low. Not “struck by lightning while holding a winning ticket” low, but comfortably in the “don’t plan your April around it…ever” tier.
So technically, there is a chance.
But also, not really.
What we do know is this:
- It exists
- People win
- It is never us
Somewhere out there are winners. Real people (allegedly) walking Augusta. Sitting in those green chairs like they belong there.
You hear about them occasionally. A coworker’s cousin. A guy your buddy knows. Someone who “got Wednesday tickets once.”
That person might as well be Bigfoot.
Looking Ahead
Applications open June 1st.
I will be there.
We will apply. We will believe, briefly, that this is the year. And then we will do this all over again like seasoned professionals next year.
Because azaleas bloom eternal.
And because we have learned absolutely nothing.
Until next time, losers.
